On the first of May, Russians celebrate “May Day”, or International Workers’ Day. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the holiday was renamed “Spring and labour day”.On this day large groups of people take part in May Day demonstrations carrying slogans, flags or flowers.  May 2nd is also typically a day off for Russians. Many families or groups of friends usually have picnics in the countryside or by the river.
