The Republic of Chuvashia is situated in the middle flow of the VolgaRiver,
in the region generally known as the Central Volga.
It boarders on Ulyanovsk and Nizhny
Novgorod regions and three republics: the Tatar, the Mari and the
Mordva.
Chuvashia has an area of about 19,000 square kilometers. It stretches
for 190 kilometres
from north to south and for about 160 kilometres from
west to east.
1 million 400 thousand people live in our republic, 60% of the
population live in towns and 40% live in the country.
The capital of the Republic is Cheboksary,
about 450 thousand people live here. Other big important towns are
Novocheboksarsk, Kanash, Alatyr and Shumerlya. There are no mountains on the
territory of our republic, but the surface is rather hilly. Forests cover about
one third of the territory. In Chuvashia there are about 400 lakes but they are
small. There are also many rivers here – the Volga,
the Sura, the Tsivil, the Anish, the Kubnya and some other small rivers. The
climate is temperate continental. Chuvashia is not very rich in mineral
resources. It has deposits of gypsum, dolomites, phosphorites, carbonates and
shale.
