Cheboksary

Cheboksary is situated in the European part of the Russian Federation, 660 kilometres eastward of Moscow. It is the capital of the Chuvash Republic. The city stands on the right bank of the Volga River between Nizhny Novgorod and KazanCheboksary is a city with a long history. It was first mentioned in written sources in 1469 when Russian soldiers passed it on their way to Kazan. There are several interpretations about the origin of the city’s name. According to some scholars, the word "Shupashkar” means "a Chuvash town or fortified settlement”, others believe that it comes from the Turkic word "sous bashi”, which means "the head of the army”. Cheboksary is an administrative, economic and cultural centre of the Chuvash Republic. It is a fast-growing city with the population of about 450,000 people. The oldest part of the city lies not far from the Volga and you can see the Vvedensky Cathedral and some other buildings there. The old streets are rather narrow but the newly built ones are wide, lined with trees and flowers. Even now the city is known for many churches but in the past Cheboksary bells were known in London and Paris. Beautiful bridges connect the eastern, central and western parts of the city separated by small rivers some time ago. A lovely view over the bay opens from some of the bridges in the evening. A majestic monument dedicated to Mother is situated on a picturesque bank of this bay; it’s one of the landmarks of the city. On the left bank of the Volga River there is the recreation area and the settlement of Sosnovka, they make up one more part of the capital. All in all, in Cheboksary there are about one hundred memorial places related to history and culture of the Chuvash Republic and Russia as a whole. In 2003 Cheboksary was recognized the cleanest city of Russia. And it’s interesting to know that Cheboksary has a twin-city in Hungary. It’s called Eger that’s why there is Eger Street in our capital. Every year on Sunday in the middle of August the city-folk celebrate the Day of Cheboksary. Usually it is a holiday for all citizens of the republic. The main riches of the city are the people living in it. All of them are different in age, nationality, creed and talents.
